Ramiro Maldonado, MD specializes in the development of new applications for Spectral-Domain Optical Coherence Tomography. He dedicated his post-graduate training at Duke University to adapt this popular imaging technology, previously designed only for adults, to also be applied in the diagnosis of retinal diseases in neonates, infants and children. Dr. Maldonado’s work with the mentorship of Dr.Toth has been pioneering in the discovery of new retinal disease features that can not be visualized with any other methodology. Dr. Maldonado’s interest in Image Analysis and Image Processing has led him to investigate methods of reconstructing vessels from OCT images. His work has been presented at international forums and is helping other doctors to understand retinopathy of prematurity from an unconventional perspective.
